Rolwaling Region
Whereas Rolwaling Valley sees regular visits from climbers every year, it’s still under the radar of the trekking crowds. For no apparent reason: It’s spectacular mountain scenery easily matches any of the more famous destinations.
Plus you get to witness a Nepali culture that it is not yet totally focused on maximizing earnings from passing travelers. Rolwaling is blessed with a lovely eco-system that is abundant with bio-diversity of a special kind which makes this area a prime destination for adventure in Nepal. This trek is one of the finest wilderness routes in the Nepal Himalaya starting from Kathmandu drive to Jagat and trek north east into the valley through the green forest which opens wide near villages of Beding (3,510m) and Na (4,120m).
And there was also amazing ice climbing! At least 10 – 15 very obvious routes within 1 hrs walking distance from either Beding or Na, many of which have more than one line to offer. If you put in a bit more walking, there is much more awaiting you. The amount of snow you will find is heavily depending on infrequent precipitation events. In our case, it had not snowed or rained since mid-October, resulting in a very high snow line (5000m+). As the temperatures are pretty low, we encountered many low angled sections of ice that would be snow covered in the Alps or elsewhere.
Rock climbing in 'Na' Village in this trek is a another attraction. 30 min walk from Na Village lead us to the rock climbing spot. Rock climbing is an activity of climbing up or across the face of giant natural rock or artificial man made replica. It an adventurous activity but it requires both physical fitness and mental agility. It also requires proper knowledge of techniques and gears crucial to ensure the safety.
